Set on the bank of Vembanad lake, Kumarakom is noted idyllic tourist destination of Kerala. Kumarakom is a small picturesque village in Kottayam district. At Kumarakom a small bird sanctuary by the name Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, comprising an area of 14 hectares is located on the edge of Vembanad lake. Thick foliage inside the bird sanctuary and water of Vembanad lake offers a good habitat to lot of water birds. Few commonly found species in bird sanctuary are Indian cormorant, Herons, Larks, Flycatcher,Teals.
